Ashley Rose.. More Than Just A Pretty Face-Show Review-10/6/06Ashley Rose is a beautiful, and very talented singer-songwriter, that much I think is obvious. What was not so obvious to me, when trekking to The Underscore in New York City last night was that I was going to see something more entertaining than I could have possibly imagined. I fully expected to see Ashley Rose singing her original, and catchy pop tunes, yes. But what I did not expect to see was The Ashley Rose Band. Maybe this has you scratching your head a bit, but I was scratching mine too. This is not just Ashley Rose with some back-up band going through the motions of playing for her. This is a band in every sense of the word. It was obvious to me from the outset as the band kicked right into high gear with a rockin' rendition of This Is Me. I have heard the song on CD 100 times, and have always had envisioned it as a kick ass show lead off rocker, and the band did not disappoint. What is so amazing to me is that this band was only put together a few months ago. They have had limited practice time and a handfull of gigs, but show up like a group of seasoned veterans. This may be accountable by their experience. Ashley Rose in her wisdom chose a more mature, somewhat older handfull of musicians instead of a bunch of young guns in her own age group. The results of that choice are obvious to me. The band was tight as could be, lead by Dave Crum on lead guitar. A tremendous guitar player in his own right, Dave seems to be the glue of the band. Every artist that depends on a band, needs that type of person beside them. Dave appears to be willing to stand aside from fame to be sure that all goes well on stage. He seems to have a great calming effect on Ashley Rose, and her stage personna appears to be growing because of it. This is key to the success of any band, or any artist, and Ashley Rose may have just found her key already. Not that the two of them are solely responsible for the band's sound. Harrison Young on keyboards is also a talent in his own right. His outstanding playing and background vocals add tremendously to the sound. His work on Ashley Roses' Dangerously, which shifts mid song to The Eurythmics Sweet Dream's was outstanding. When speaking to Harrison after the show I got the feeling of his total belief in the music of Ashley Rose. When he spoke of her, I felt that he had nothing but total respect for her and that he, like Dave Crum were there mainly for that reason. As most musicians know there is not always a lot of money in club bands. Sometimes you have to belong to something you believe in because it just feels right. It not only felt right, but it sounded right to me. This is a band that I now have much higher expectations of, and for. Rounding out the band is Paul Del Corral on bass and Mike Finkleday on drums. Don't want to play down their contributions as the drums and bass are the backbeat of any great band. I also found in my conversations with Mike that he too is a dedicated Ashley Rose believer. Mike has been in many a band and he too feels something special towards this one. All of these 4 gentlemen are a class act and Ashley Rose is lucky to have them. As for Ashley Rose herself, she was in fine voice as usual. I don't think that when seeing her, you can even get a hint as to how wonderfully this girl can sing. I have heard her singing other styles of music and believe me this girl can sing. In this kind of rock type forum her vocal talents don't always get their due. But her great pop/rock flavored songs do. Even at the young age of 18 Ashley Rose has the ability to pen some great melodic songs. Sitting through her show sounds like a parade of an established artists greatest hits, instead of a show of her early career efforts. You can find yourself singing along or moving to every tune. The songs from her first studio recordings such as Blind To The Light or Deep, sound phenomenal with the band sound. And the bands closing number My Song, should be an obvious hit on anyone's chart as you cannot help but sing its infectious chorus. The live version only enhances the great hooks and melody. My feeling is this may be an Ashley Rose signature song that someday may be on the lips of every music lover. Ashley Rose has mixed a handfull of newly written songs into her set also. Lonely Heart and the rocker Easier Than You were standouts. And as always I had to fight back the tears when she sang the song that will always be a favorite of mine, With You. Written when Ashley was 13, it is a poignant ballad that I think all of us have felt its meaning at one time or another. I have to say in all honestly, the hour drive to the city for me made me reluctant to attend, but in hindsight I am so glad that I did. If you have at all been contemplating attending an Ashley Rose show let me tell you, please go.You will not regret it. It is a great show with a great singer, singing great songs with a great band. What more can you ask for than that. After all, it is now quite apparent, that Ashley Rose is much more than a pretty face. Review by Roger Passero (Ashleyrosesings.com)
